Q: I'm behind on my taxes and a "taking" has been done. What does that mean?
A: This means that the Collector has placed a lien against your property with the Registry of Deeds and the account has now been turned over to the Treasurer.
Q: How do I read my tax title balance statement?
A: You can reach out to the Treasurer's office or check out this sample.
Q: I received a demand notice from the Collector and I'm in tax title, now what?
A: The Collector is required to send out demand notices. If you do not pay the current year taxes, the Collector may do a subsequent.
Q: What is a subsequent?
A: A subsequent is when the Collector "sweeps" any current taxes due into the existing tax title account.
Q: How do I remove a lien from my property?
A: Once the tax title account has been paid off, we will need to file an Instrument of Redemption. To do this, we'll need a check for $105.00 made out to the Commonwealth of MA. The Treasurer will file this as a courtesy and it will clear the taking.
